Hi, my name is Julie and I love audiobooks. I feel like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.
I am old school when it comes to reading. I refuse to get a Kindle, because it feels like I’m cheating on my books. Maybe one day I’ll break down and get one, but nothing will ever be able to replace the feel and smell of a real book.
One thing I have no problem welcoming into my life are audiobooks. They are the best thing to ever happen to driving. They allow me to “read” while I otherwise cannot, whether I’m driving or it’s dark in a car I’m riding in. They also give my eyes a rest, and after a day of staring at my computer and going through files, my eyes thank me for not reading a normal book. .
I’m currently “reading” (listening) to John Grisham’s The Whistler. Per usual, it’s an incredible book and he is everything I aspire to be in an author. It’s about judicial misconduct, murder, money, and a whole slew of other topics.
Audiobooks are easy to download and easy to listen to, but my favorite recent discovery is the app OverDrive. It has won me over even more for audiobooks, because it utilizes my library. You enter in your library card information and link your library, and you can check out ebooks and audiobooks onto your phone. I love this, because for me anything that keeps the county library relevant is a good idea in my book. (No pun intended).
What are you currently reading? I would love to hear from you!
I’ve never tried an audio book… I’ll have to give it a go… X

I haven’t tried audio books recently, I really should because there are so many more places offering them, like the library. And I’m sure they don’t cost the same as when I first had a go, way back when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth! 😉

Hahaha you will love them! It makes times when I can’t read a physical book so much better. And they are much cheaper now! And with Overdrive, as long as you have a library card they are free!!

As someone living in Canada, I don’t think I have access to Overdrive. The idea sounds great. I’ll just have to go to my local library and see what I can check out!

Oh no! I hate that. There is another app similar to overdrive but I can’t remember its name. Maybe it works in other areas. I’m sure the library can definitely help you though!

Oh man, when I’m on a long road trip by myself, an audio book is the way I go! Makes it much better!

Oh my goodness I’m so glad I saw your post. I too am obsessed with the smell, feel, and even the “energy” of a “real” book. I’ve been feeling this urge to listen to audiobooks so that I can consume more and as you pointed out, give my eyes a much-needed rest. I also have to admit that when I listen to audiobooks it reminds me of my childhood when my parents would read to me. There’s something special about listening to a story, it allows you the bandwidth to visualize the characters, scenes, and environment in greater detail than when you are reading the words—because you have less limits placed upon you while listening. I’ve dragged my feet with using my Kindle App (to purchase audiobooks), I don’t have a Kindle, I just use the app on my iPhone and iPad. I also don’t feel like dealing with Audible. But now you have come to the rescue. Thank you Julie! I love the idea of syncing my public library with the OverDrive app, which means I can now explore my library considerably more times than I ever would. Thank you. Thank you . Thank you. I’m about to download it now and cross my fingers that my library system is available! Oh and I’m so sorry for this long comment. Your post gave me an injection of LIFE!

I LOVE your thoughts about it reminding you of your parents reading to you! That’s so true!!! I just use my phone too! I think the only way I’ll ever have a Kindle is if someone just gives me one! Haha but let me know what you think of overdrive and the audiobooks! I think you’ll be so happy you downloaded them ☺️

I downloaded and synced last night, and started listening to a book until I fell asleep. When I woke up this morning I had to rewind the book back to the spot that I last recall hearing LOL. Thank you so much for sharing this app and this awesome way for me to support my library.

Yayy that makes me so happy!! I thought it was the best of both worlds! Now you can “read” when you never thought you could before 🙂 So glad you’re enjoying it!

Yes, I’m so giddy. I also don’t feel like I’m “betraying” the book world, because I’m accessing books from my public library, that I normally wouldn’t have time to check out and read. I now can gobble up book after book with a different level of joy!

I thoroughly love audio books. Theres nothing like a book in hand but audio books are way more convenient that packing up your entire library and lugging it around with you. Thank you for this.
